Deutermann's books just get better and better. Here he revisits the highly political world of naval career officers - especially admirals, almost-admirals, and their ambitious aides in telling a riveting tale of murder, cover-up, and detection.

Scorpion in the Sea and The Edge of Honor, the first two novels by retired Navy Capt. P. T. Deutermann, were marvelous tales of today's Navy at sea. They were marked by sharp action, deep plotting and in-depth characterization.

Official Privilege is still about the Navy, but it is a murder mystery set in Washington. The reader might expect the ship-driver author to be less familiar with this type of story. But such is not the case.

The superb plotting and characterization are here, as is suspense and a clear awareness of the dangersand dalliance that can thrive in official Washington.

The author of The Edge of Honor and Scorpion in the Sea delivers another fine suspense novel enhanced by solid background detail. Deutermann provides more step-by-step investigative detail than in necessary or desirable, and his characterizations can be thin, but the authenticity implied by his naval background (he is a retired navy captain) is evident in every sentence of this absorbing and, by the end, exciting tale.
